A new study published in PLOS Mental Health indicates that cannabis-based medicinal products can provide long-term improvements for chronic insomnia patients.
The research, led by Imperial College London, followed 124 patients for 18 months who had not responded to conventional treatments. Results showed sustained and significant enhancements in subjective sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and overall quality of life throughout the study period.
The treatment demonstrated a favourable safety profile, with only a small percentage of patients reporting mild side effects like fatigue or dry mouth, and no serious adverse events.
As one of the longest follow-up studies on this topic, it offers valuable real-world evidence. However, researchers note its observational nature and lack of a control group as limitations. They emphasize that while the results are promising, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm long-term efficacy and safety before widespread clinical adoption can be recommended.
